H.M.S. ENTERPRISE delivers Emperor Haile Selassie to Haifa

A small collection of photographs belonging to the late Terence Conway Joyce, JX131469 Seaman Gunner serving aboard HMS ANTELOPE (June 34 - Oct 36). They show H.M.S. ENTERPRISE delivering Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and his forty-six-person entourage to Haifa on May 8th 1936. He is greeted by a British military salute and several dignitaries including the Mayor of Haifa, the General Manager of Palestine Railways and the British District Officer ENTERPRISE had departed Djibouti in French Somaliland On the afternoon of May 4th 1936 carrying the royal party, which had fled there as their country fell to Italian forces, and transported him to Haifa in the British Mandate of Palestine, beginning a five-year period in exile in England.
