The British carrier forces are under the command of R-Adml. Sir Philip Vian, known as "Vian of the Cossack," for his rescue of British prisoners from the hell ship Altmark. Three of the five types of planes used by the carrier force are the American Hellcat and Corsair fighter-bombers and the Avenger, torpedo-bomber, all of which have been tried and proved in most carrier strikes in the Pacific war. In addition, they carry British Seafire fighters, the carrier-borne version of the latest Spitfire, armed with two 20 mm. cannon and four machine-guns.
The second British aircraft carried is the Firefly, the most heavily armed fighter of the Royal Navy. Armed with four 20 mm. cannon and rocket-firing devices, it carries terrific firepower for knocking out land strong posts and gun positions.
