HMS Activity.....Escort carrier, man lost overboard....
« on: 13 January 2014 10:00:33 pm »

First post on here from a Bomber Command researcher straying into naval territory! Can anyone advise me on how I can find out what happened to one L/S Charles S Annetts. He was officially listed as "Missing Presumed Killed" on 11/12/42, which is his officially recorded date of death. At the time of his loss, HMS Activity was on sea trials after conversion to an aircraft carrier and I summise she would be in the Irish sea or near Atlantic close to Scotland/Ireland. At this time HMS Activity was serving as a platform for Fleet Air Arm aviators to train for deck landings at sea. No reason for this man's loss overboard and subsequent death is given in the records I have seen so far and he was the only man lost from this ship around this time. I am trying to clear up this family mystery for a friend and am a bit off my patch with naval matters...any help appreciated, thanks, Alan.

Has anyone checked the ship's log?  National Archives ref: ADM.53/115239 covers December 1942.

It may not give full details, but would record the ships position on 11 Dec, and if he was seen to go over the side, it should be noted.
