My Grandad James Goldsmith was promoted from seaman to leading seaman in a few weeks after , he had been at adrossan and then sent to gibralter this was during the war, was it common for seaman to jump 2 rates?

Strictly there was no 'seaman', but rather Ordinary Seaman (O/S) and Able Seaman (A/B). You would not normally by pass Able to get to Leading Seaman.....
