HMS MMS 101 (J 601) information
« on: 03 March 2017 06:02:52 pm »

MMS 101 was a motor mine sweeper of the MMS I class,
built by Wagstaff & Hatfield and sunk off the coast of Mihaniona, Greece,
on the 29th of November 1944.
I have tried to find some more informations about it,
but nothing,
not a single clue.
Most of the informations are taken from the excellent uboat.net,
but nothing more.
Does anyone know something more about it ?
Any information would be much appreciated.

MMS.101
Built by Wagstaffe and Hatfield, Port Greville,Canada
Launched 23.12.1941 Commissioned 6.2.1942 (43?)

Initially part of the 121st Minesweeping Flotilla, then from 1943, transferred to the 120th MSF, both based in the Mediterranean.

Loss – whilst commanded by Lieutenant William Henry Sturtridge RNVR, she was in company with two other motor minesweepers, and was employed clearing a minefield in the vicinity of Salonika.

The group had performed several laps during the day, and as it was nearing sunset, it was decided to sweep towards the designated anchorage. At 17.10, when off Panomi lighthouse, there was a large explosion under the starboard ship of the team, MMS.101, the ship completely disintegrating. All the ships stopped and lowered boats, and three survivors were picked up from the floating wreckage.  It was believed that a contact mine had been responsible. Fifteen men were lost.
