Hello Everyone,
I am new to researching family history and to this Forum. My Grandfather George Cummins served in the Merchant and Royal Navy almost all his working life. I have his service record and several medals.
When I was a Girl I remembered him telling me how his ship (Wild Swan) was bombed in the Bay of Biscay and how he clung onto bits of the ship to stay afloat until he was rescued. My granddad suffered from several medical conditions related to exposure to sea water for extended periods and to being in contact with oil/chemicals.
however on looking at his service record it seems he was on-board the Wild Swan in early 1942 and the Drake from May 1942. this does not tally with the date that the Wild Swan was sunk.
Could this be an error or did granddad confuse the boat that was sunk? any help or guidance on where to go next would be very gratefully received.
thank you
Sharon
