« on: 24 May 2016 09:00:16 pm »

My father Petty Officer George Hinkins J.X 255445 joined the RN in November 1925 aged 15-  From the 29 th June 1929 to 2 nd December 1929 the entry reads HMS Vernon (Skate) Can any one tell me what the Skate inside the brackets refers to.

The notation Vernon (Skate) indicates that he was serving aboard the ‘R’ class destroyer H.M.S. Skate and his pay and victualling account was held by H.M.S. Vernon, which was a Torpedo school in Portsmouth.
