Help with HMS ganges Research
« on: 09 September 2018 07:47:14 am »

Hi,

Have attached photo of my Grandfather on parade at HMS Ganges(Shotley) sometime from 1935 and 1936.

My grandfather name is George Douglas Blake with c/mx 766584 and marked on the photo with an X.

Can anyone give me some tips on how i could find out which Class/Mess he was in and also wondering why some of the serviceman had what i assume is called a Landyard which is circular hanging at the lower center of the chest, were as my grandfather for example has two long Landyard having from the shoulder and looping down to the lower center of the chest. What does this mean?

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Best wishes

Jez

Try contacting the Ganges Association , they may help with class / mess
https://www.hmsgangesassoc.org/help/contact

The ratings not wearing lanyards have a long Bosun's Call (or Whistle) and Chain which was worn round the neck - it's the chain you can see in the photo

Greetings,
Not sure what rig they are wearing ,when I was at Ganges white fronts went with white hats, it looks like Sunday division, so possible around October and surge jumpers would have been possible the next step to black caps, they still issued cap boxes and both colour hats when I joined in -1954
