Awarding of St. George's medal 4th class
« on: 25 June 2024 07:01:02 pm »

Hello,

My grandfather was awarded the St. George's Medal, 4th Class (medal stamped 1272989), while serving aboard HMS Lizard.

His name was Stoker Petty Officer Norman Lee, and his service number was 295265.

I have his service record, which shows the medal as being issued but does not provide the reason for the award. According to the service record, the medal was issued on 2 March 1921.

Is it possible to find out the reason for the award? If someone could point me in the right direction, I would be grateful.

Many thanks for your time.

Norman

This was a Russian medal - the Czar awarded a number of these to members of the British armed forces during WW1.  In this case, it would have been to recognise service at the Battle of Jutland - although his service papers may record a date of 1921, the medals were actually granted in 1918.

See: https://battleofjutlandcrewlists.miraheze.org/wiki/St._George%27s_Medal_4th_Class

for a list of those awarded, and if you scroll down the list you will find the name of your grandfather

Many thanks PhiloNauticus.

I had already seen the 1st and 2nd pages you mention, finding a citation is my aim here so I will go and see if I can take a look at the other document which is unfortunately not available online.

Next up, researching the mention in dispatches and the DSM (have scoured the London Gazette web site but no luck so far)

thanks again for the input.

Cheers,

norman
